Since the 2004 General Election, Indonesia’s election laws have provided greater opportunities for citizens with disabilities to exercise their political rights in elections. However, these opportunities have not yet been fully realized in practice. For various reasons, many persons with disabilities remain excluded from voter lists, and even when they are registered, they often face obstacles in effectively exercising their right to vote.
Moreover, recent election legislation has shown tendencies that may result in discrimination against voters with disabilities. Therefore, the issue of electoral accessibility for persons with disabilities deserves serious attention, as it concerns fundamental citizenship rights that the state is obligated to guarantee and protect.
These issues are examined in the publication Access for All Eligible Citizens: Expanding Electoral Rights to Vote and Stand for Election for Persons with Disabilities, which explores the challenges and opportunities for ensuring equal electoral participation and representation for persons with disabilities.
