Tracing Perludem’s Advocacy Efforts for Election Law Reform
This special edition of the collection of reflections on Perludem’s work with civil society in strengthening democracy and electoral governance. This edition focuses on how advocacy is carried out and pursued, providing a space to revisit various ideas, activities, and processes that have unfolded in recent months, while also reflecting on the challenges that continue to shape Indonesia’s democratic journey.
One of the main focuses of this edition is the advocacy for electoral law reform undertaken together with the Civil Society Coalition for the Codification of the Election Law. Drawing on evaluations of the 2024 Election and various research findings, this effort has evolved into a lengthy process of formulating proposals for regulatory reform and bringing them into different policy spaces. Meetings with election management bodies, ministries, political parties, local governments, the Constitutional Court, the media, and various community groups have been part of the effort to broaden the conversation about the future of electoral law.
This edition also features a range of other equally important initiatives, from democracy education and discussions on alternative electoral systems to efforts to promote safer political spaces. We also examine technological developments, particularly the use of artificial intelligence in elections, as a new challenge that needs to be understood and anticipated collectively. The various pieces in this edition demonstrate that efforts to strengthen democracy take many forms and unfold across diverse spaces. Research, discussion, education, advocacy, and policy engagement are interconnected parts of the same process. Through this special edition, we hope readers can follow and take a closer look at these ongoing efforts, including the ideas and reflections that accompany them.
