Protecting Citizens’ Voting Rights in the 2019 General Election and Women’s Representation in Election Management Bodies

Indonesia adopts an electoral system in which voting in elections is a right of every citizen. Citizens are granted the freedom to exercise their political rights in an electoral process without coercion from the state. However, even though voting in Indonesia is a right rather than an obligation, every election is accompanied by efforts to increase voter participation. These efforts form an important part of political education for the public within the electoral process.
