The Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem) organized a Training of Trainers (ToT) on Political Education for high school students as part of its Democracy Academy program, aimed at strengthening young people’s political awareness and participatory skills.

Jakarta, 24 Juni 2026 – To build political awareness and participatory skills among young people, the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem) held a Training of Trainers (ToT) on Political Education for High School Students in Jakarta on 24-25 June 2026. This ToT marks the first cohort of the Democracy Academy, a non-formal education programme that will eventually reach three target groups: high school students, university students, and school teachers.

The training brought together 16 high school students from the greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek), carried out in line with the principles of gender equality, disability, and social inclusion (GEDSI) and equal participation for all participants. The training was facilitated by Perludem researchers, who also developed the curriculum and modules used: Introduction to Democracy, Democratic Actors, Democracy in the Digital Space, and Democratic Skills.

On the first day, facilitators presented the four core modules interactively through discussions and simulations. Each session concluded with a post-test, showing an average correct-answer rate of 83% across the first two sessions, rising to 94% across the following two.

Another participant leads a group discussion while taking their turn as trainer.

The second day opened with a mock-teaching session, the core of the entire ToT process. Participants took turns delivering the material they had received to their respective groups, stepping into the role of trainer for their peers. The session closed with a joint reflection and the development of follow-up plans by each participant.

The final evaluation showed that most participants rated the substance of the material, the facilitators’ delivery, and the learning materials as good and adequate, alongside suggestions for enriching the teaching methods used during the mock-teaching session. These evaluation results will inform the refinement of the next ToT cohorts, which will target university students and, subsequently, school teachers.

As a follow-up, Perludem is opening a scholarship scheme for graduates to implement what they have learned, and inviting them to write popular opinion pieces reflecting on the material, sharing personal experiences, or proposing everyday democratic action. These pieces will be published through Rumah Pemilu and compiled together with work from the university student and teacher cohorts into an anthology.

This set of follow-up activities marks an important step in extending the impact of Perludem’s Democracy Academy, ensuring that what participants have learned does not end in the training room, but grows into a grassroots movement for political education among young people.
